Sony DADC now offers a technology that applies CD-Keys directly onto each CD-ROM. The code can be read automatically by every standard CD/DVD-ROM drive. The publisher simply provides Sony DADC with a list of codes and during a special manufacturing process, every CD-ROM gets its own unique code. The gamer can then log into the Gaming Server without even knowing his number.

Problems with physical CD-Keys which are currently used

• Production: Adding a unique CD-Key to every package is very expensive and also slows down the production process. The Electronic CD-Key enables automatic packaging.
• Convenience: End users are required to type in a very long code, such as NVHD6-KG4WJ-YQPDL-A79AJ-3FVQW-4XTE9-9RYGG. This often leads to data entry mistakes and unnecessary support traffic.
• Security: CD-Keys are very valuable, so the codes have to be kept secret during printing. Codes are often stolen by people using digital cameras, and the stolen codes lock legitimate users out.
